Wexford will not be able to call upon star forward Mattie Forde for their Leinster quarter-final with Kildare.

Even though the crunch match is still another week away, Forde's injury is more serious than originally suspected and he will need more time in which to recover.

While it leaves Jason Ryan with a big decision to make on who to slot into the starting XV in Forde's absence, it also means The Model County are without their star performer.

"It will be another four to six weeks before I'll be able to get training," confirmed Forde.

"So I'd say my involvement in this year's Championship will be very limited.

"The initial medical diagnosis was that I had ruptured a sciatic nerve.

"But I later had a MRI scan in Dublin, and that showed that one of the discs in my back had lodged in a sciatic nerve.

"This meant that I needed an operation to resolve the problem."
